Gregg Gillis has fed the animals, and my appetite for an unreasonably fun, insurmountably catchy summer mashup album. I doubt I was alone in holding my breath in anticipation of a new Girltalk album. Surely it would fall short to the high standards Night Ripper set… After listening to the album about 10 times through over the last two days, I’m prepared to say that it is every bit as catchy and well though out as Night Ripper. In fact I’m prepared to say it’s even better.

Taking a page from the book of Radiohead, Feed the Animals is available online on a pay what you can basis. Paying less than 5$ will get you the album in mp3 format, paying 5$ or more will get you the mp3’s, the FLAC files and a single mp3 with the whole album mixed. Few bands have enjoyed the kind of longevity that Weezer has. I think everyone was kind of disappointed with the last album, making this, the red album, all the more crucial if they want to continue to be relevant. Pitchfork certainly seems to think that its time to to lay the band’s legacy to rest before they run out of colors to name their albums after. What do you think?

Well this is one of many forthcoming obligatory posts on the subject. Pitchfork had sour grapes on account to it wasn’t as awesome as Return to the Sea. I haven’t made up my mind yet, and like all new records it will take some time for this one to grow on me in any meaningful way. Let the locals grow on you.

Another chapter in the story of Indie growing up is found as Mates of State, join the likes of the Handsome Furs as married Indie duos. While not as serious as their Canadian counterparts, Mates of State stays well within the realm of legitimate pop rock frivolity. They’re latest album Re-Arrange Us is just plain catchy, with enough maturity and musical flourishes to keep you listening over and over and over. Get over your fear of commitment and pick this album up!
