Monday Re up #15: Soul Investigators Edition

Filed under: Soul — Tags: — Alex @ 10:43 am

NicoleWillis

Once again, the sites been down for a few days due to the powers that be…in charge of my hosting. Here’s some of the warm soul cooking I’ve been listening to while the site was down. It’s perfect winter music. Nicole Willis and the Soul Investigators have some tracks that hearken the days of disco, Be Bop and Soul in an amazing way. I heard something about a remix album floating around so you might see that coming up real soon.

One Last Post About Bon Iver

Filed under: acoustic — Tags: — Alex @ 11:08 am

Bon Iver

It is with some reluctance that I write this post. I usually try my best not to post stuff that hypemachine is already saturated with and the last time I counted 10 of hypemachine’s top 50 songs were Bon Iver songs. That being said, I just can’t get enough of the man and I’ll be dammed if I’ll let his popularity stop me from posting some his new songs from the Blood Bank EP. Anyways this post is proof that I liked Bon Iver before your grandmother did.

Dead Prez vs. David Banner

dead prez

I’ve had this track for awhile from album It’s the Motherfucking Remix Vol 2.2 championed by the good people at The Rub NYC. It’s a good Christmas Carol and by any measure David Banner and Dead Prez can’t steer you wrong. If you like it, consider buying the album, it’s one of the better remix albums out there.

DJ Bling: King of Rock

djbling

Speaking of mash ups, I got the word on DJ Bling in my inbox today. The new mash up album called King of Rock focuses on mixing dad rock like Led Zeppelin with the likes of Kanye West and Jay Z. The intro track is just so good I though I’d share that with you as well as a Ludacris, Rage Against the Machine track. You can get the full 40 track mixtape here, for free.

Monday Re up #14: Common Talk

Girl Talk

So I’m about a month late on the Girl Talk coverage. To be honest, this is because I was pretty disappointed with the show early last month. Perhaps by no fault of Gregg Gillis himself, the show was nevertheless a breeding ground for unsavory characters and sweaty alt bros to borrow a term from hipster runoff. It also marked the first concert where I found the females were causing more trouble then the males. Why? I have no idea. But every time I got elbowed more than necessary, pushed or had to deal with someone super high on drugs it was more often then not a girl. One in particular, you know who you are.

The show itself was fine though and I probably would have enjoyed it at a smaller venue. I’m therefore renouncing my future attendance to any sold out shows at Metropolis, barring extenuating circumstances. I think it was originally planned for Club Soda and got moved. Which by the way I didn’t find out until I showed up that night and saw a big crowd outside Metropolis and no one at Club Soda. Holy unorganized shit batman.

So this week I’m gonna post an old favorite Girl Talk remix of mine, because it would be really lame if I posted something from Feed the Animals, you should all have that album by now. Oh, and this dude named Kanye West released an album. I think it was called 808s and Heartbreaks. The sales figures for the first week were no graduation but I supposed that this album is more of an experiment so a mere 450,000 for the first week will do.

I’m not going to post a song from that album because Island records will likely harass me. Instead, here’s a filthy Common song featuring Kanye West that seems to be entirely about sexual innuendo.

Fools Gold Remixed

Fools Gold

So remember way back when, we couldn’t stop listening to Cross the Dancefloor by Atlanta king Treasure Fingers? Well I was going through a Fools Gold Remix album (Scion Cd Sampler Vol 22) and came up with this gem of a remix. It gives the song a even more authentic disco feel then it already had. Check it out.

The Knife to Write Darwin Inspired Opera

The Knife

As if it wasn’t already marked on your calendar, November 2009 will mark the 150th anniversary since Charles Darwin published The Origin of Species, establishing the theory of evolution as we know it today. The Opera is called Tomorrow, In A Year and its ambitious influences are,

“Change as a process and the interrelationship of all things is the basic material of the performance.”
- hotelproforma.dk

This is particularly exciting because we haven’t had any new material from The Knife for quite some time and because the two electronic wizards are probably the only acts I can imagine pulling of something as grandiose as a Darwin inspired Opera. Not surprisingly the Opera will be exploratory and “challenge the conventional conception of opera”. The opera will have a Japanese choreographer by the name of Hiroaki Umeda and will feature three protagonist singers from three different backgrounds electronica pop, classical opera and performance. They’ve even sent a man named Olof Dreijer into the depths of the Amazon rain forest to record sounds of animals fish and plants. Not sure what sounds the plants are making but we’ll soon see. Let’s hope that the performance is recorded well and made readily available for those of us unable to jettison to Copenhagen for the September 2009 premier.
