GL on the Oscar Nom M.I.A.

Filed under: Electronic, Hip Hop — Tags: — Alex @ 11:00 am

M.I.A.

Believe it or not, M.I.A. is nominated for an Academy award for her contribution “O Saya” to the film Slumdog Millionaire which is heavily favored for best picture. Benjamin Button? Give me a break. This is Maya Arulpragasam’s first oscar nomination and personally I’m looking forward to her winning so that I hear her acceptance speech.

Take a look at Dangermouse

Danger Mouse

It’s not that strange these days to look back only four or five years and still feel a creeping sense of nostalgia previously reserved for things decades in the past. Dangermouse does this for me like nothing Johnny Carson does for your Dad.

Remember 2004? When mashups didn’t saturate every nook and cranny of the internet and the ideas behind the songs actually created new meaning? Dangermouse’s landmark mashup album The Grey Album – mixing The Beatles white album and Jay Z’s Black album – was really the beginning of the end for mashups in a way. These days everyone with a pirated copy of ableton live will throw together any indie hits they please and get away with it.

By contributing to the massive popularization of the mashup genre, Dangermouse pulled a fast one on us all by staying away from the monster he helped create. Interestingly enough, the grey album is up for donwload on Illegal Art’s website which shows ties with probably the most popular mashup dj ever, GirlTalk. Now he’s one half of Gnarls Barkley and producing albums by MF DOOM, Gorrillaz and Beck.

Think of this post and these songs as a Dangermouse retrospective so far. Minus Beck just because I’m not on that boat.

Chet Baker gets the Last Laugh

Filed under: Soul, acoustic — Tags: — Alex @ 11:20 am

Chet Baker

I don’t usually post on Saturdays, but then again I don’t usually post anything in the realm of Chet Baker. He is one of those artists that you can’t help but pay some attention no matter who you are. If you don’t like Chet Baker you basically don’t like music. Okay that’s extreme but what the hell kick my ass if you think otherwise. In the comments section of course.

A few months ago I was in a music store that was on the verge of closing its doors and becoming something more profitable – selling stereos i think. I ended up picking an amazing black and white Chet Baker poster and as a result I ventured to purchase download his entire discography. I remember the two male employees getting far more excited than was appropriate about the fact that I had picked this poster. I think they were also relieved that I hadn’t chosen a The Darkness poster. Perhaps Chet Baker is now only music for music nerds. This song is a classic – I think it was composed by George Gershwin – and I’m a bit curious to see how people like it. Maybe Chet Baker can still be relevant? Maybe not.

Remix Roundup: Weekend Edition

Filed under: Electronic, Remixes, acoustic — Tags: , — Alex @ 11:44 am

Kaws

Found this remix in my inbox a few days ago from Death to the Throne and although the song little bit by lykke li has already been blogged and remixed to the dickens I’ve decided to cram one more down the connected tubes of the internet. Also, if you don’t already have ticket for the Lykke Li show in February get them soon, I expect it will sell out if it hasn’t already. Add it to your weekend playlist and have a good one.

Biggie gets a movie and another post

biggie

So the Notorious B.I.G. finally got his own major motion picture, it’s in theaters now and I’ve read mixed reviews so be wary of spending any money on it. When your movie releases several places lower than an abomination like Paul Blart: Mall Cop in terms of box office performance, you’ve got to be disappointed. Anyways it gives me a chance to post this Hypnotize remix by Cold Blank.

Be in a Designer Drugs Video

DesignerDrugs

Tomorrow night if you find yourself in Brooklyn and in the need for a party check out the Designer Drugs music video shoot for their track “zombies”. The shoot is being styled by the twentyten so stay sharp. They even specify dressing in greys or black, so leave your neon and American Apparel colours at home. If you end up going throw up a comment or email us about how it was. Here’s the event on the book and a remix of course.

The Remixes: Vol. 2

Nina Simone

It has been quite some time since we released our first remix, which married Notorious B.I.G. and Mates of State. Because it was received so well and because we just can’t help ourselves, here is another one.

This edition takes Kanye West’s hit Diamonds in Sierra Lione about the moral outrage involved with the diamond trade in africa and (quite appropriately I’d say) mixes it with Nina Simone’s Sinnerman.

However, you will notice that we used Felix da Housecat’s wonderful remix of Sinnerman rather than the original. It’s nice when a mashup not only sounds good but combines the themes of both of the songs and this is what we hoped to achieve with this mix. Let us know if you like it or if you hate it.

The Coast: Expatriate

Filed under: Rock — Tags: — Alex @ 10:15 am

thecoast

A friend of mine (you know who you are) recommended this band to me about a month ago and I just never got around to listening to them. I’m glad I finally did because Toronto’s The Coast is not just another Canadian indie band. Well actually they do stick pretty cleanly to the conventions we typically associate with indie rock, but let’s just say that they’re a great Canadian indie band AND it seems not many people know about them, so all the better.

You can buy their album Expatriate from their website and I assure you the rest of the songs are just as good as this one.

Passion Pit Spares Us A Chunk of Change

Filed under: Electronic, Rock, Video — Tags: , — Alex @ 12:32 pm

passionpit

I have an overwhelming feeling that I may be more than a little late on finding out about Passion Pit. Even the BBC has called them the sound of 2009. I’m not quite sure how the BBC fits into the U.K. mainstream media as far as music goes but I think it’s safe to say you may already know about them. In fact, one of my friends saw a poster for their album Chunk of Change on his way to the grocery store.

Nevertheless, it’s music worth posting, so here are a few of the standout songs from the album and a goofy video.

Move On Up: Remixed

Curtis

You might recognize the beat of Move On Up by the late and great Curtis Mayfield from the Kanye West hit Touch the Sky featuring Lupe Fiasco. This remix by Dj Ayres and is part of the remix album It’s the Motherfucking Remix Vol 2.2 by The Rub crew.
