Getting Lost in The Field

The Field

This is something pretty different than what is normally talked about on these pages but change is good right? When a friend told me about The Field and described it as a European minimalist electronic artist and played me a quick clip, I was reluctant. But I gave it a honest try and what I discovered is that every alien element I had previously sensed was quickly assimilated into my consciousness became both ordinary and amazing.

If you’re like me and you don’t listen to this kind of music often, you’ll have to let your ears learn to listen to The Field. It’s strongest element is also it’s most limiting and what I mean by that is there are many situations in which I just can’t picture listening to The Field. Any particularly extroverted or social situation for example. That being said, it’s amazing for activities that require focus, like writing or working. I was reading some of the comments on The Field’s last fm page and one girl said that her work productivity increases by 50% when she’s listening to The Field and having listened to the album through a few times now, I know exactly what she means.

I don’t often read pitchfork, but they seemed to have gone apeshit for the album I’m talking about From Here We Go Sublime. They gave it 9.0 rating and put a big red “best new music” sticker next to it, which I think is supposed to make you want to listen to it more. I did however agree with most of the reviewers comments, caveat I didn’t read the whole thing. One useful thing I did glean from it was instead of thinking of the music as repeating, think or it as revolving. This is very true because although the beats repeat, the production gives a very real third dimension that is not at all repetitive and allows you to immerse yourself in moments.
