He’s also behind all the killer nights HGHLY TGGBL has been hosting at the Fix every Friday. Since we were migrating the servers we didn’t get a chance to tell you about this sooner! And for that we are sorry.

Check it out.

Monday Re up #12: Japanese Psuedo Celebrity Edition

Hate all you want on the man, Steve Aoki knows how to throw a party. That seems to be where most people have settled over the ongoing debate over his legitimacy. Throughout ridiculous tales of stolen laptops and hotel parties, it’s pretty easy to dismiss Steve as vapid celebrity. This publication, will officially stand behind Aoki in an effort not to take ourselves too seriously. I think Steve understands that. Anyways, here’s a remix of control by Metro Station he did not too long ago. Show up. Dance. Don’t hate.

Girl Talk Feeds the Animals

Filed under: DJ Sets, Mash ups — Tags: , — Alex @ 10:57 am

Gregg Gillis has fed the animals, and my appetite for an unreasonably fun, insurmountably catchy summer mashup album. I doubt I was alone in holding my breath in anticipation of a new Girltalk album. Surely it would fall short to the high standards Night Ripper set… After listening to the album about 10 times through over the last two days, I’m prepared to say that it is every bit as catchy and well though out as Night Ripper. In fact I’m prepared to say it’s even better.

Taking a page from the book of Radiohead, Feed the Animals is available online on a pay what you can basis. Paying less than 5$ will get you the album in mp3 format, paying 5$ or more will get you the mp3’s, the FLAC files and a single mp3 with the whole album mixed. Paying 10$ or more will get you all that and a physical copy of the CD once it comes out. Download it here.

On Steve Aoki / Pillowface and his airplane chronicles

Filed under: DJ Sets, Electronic — Tags: , — Alex @ 4:13 pm

Whether you see him as the avant garde posterboy for the indie-electro-punk party throwing phenomena we’ve all been waiting for or just another dude from LA who has become the veritable Paris Hilton of indie DJ’s…One thing is for certain Steve Aoki has transformed himself into a brand name to be reckoned with.

What do i mean by brand name? I was at Urban Outfitters the other day and spotted a hoody that came in special “Steve Aoki” colours which was 30$ more than the regular hoody. And I think we’re all well aware of the now ubiquitous WESC Aoki headphones that every DJ seems to own these days.

So what do you think? take a good long hard look at this man pictured below on the left.

I figure this is either a result of
A) A prodigious businessman who has risen to the top through meticilous branding and market research or
B) A dude who likes to party too much

Regardless of what you think, Pitchfork has declared his new album Pillowface and his airplane chronicles “Decadent Hipster Gold” and while i won’t expand on that…there are a few pretty hot tracks i think you should hear, they are as follows:

Steve Aoki – Waters Of Nazereth [Erol Alkans Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr Re-Edit, Feat. Pase Rock, With Justice] (mp3)

Buy on iTunes

Steve Aoki – Je Veux Te Voir [With Yelle] (mp3)

Buy on iTunes

Steve Aoki – We Are Rockstars [Feat. Spank Rock & Amanda Blank, With Does It Offend You, Yeah?] (mp3)

On VNDLSM this Friday

Toronto’s VNDLSM hits Coda Club this Friday backed up by Montreal’s Hatchmatik and Brendon Duvall and from what I’ve gathered, they’re live show is worth checking out. Not convinced? then stay the fuck home and I’ll tell you about it Saturday. One less person to bump into me and spill my drink.

Hostilities aside, Coda will likely be the perfect size venue for a show like this and it should be a good time. Check out some tunes to warm you up:

VNDLSM – Uh Oh! (mp3)

Rihanna – Umberalla [VNDLSM remix] [Diplo RE-remix] (mp3)

On Nu Ravers anniversary pictures

It’s been more than a few days but hold on, i made it worth your wait. Nu Ravers on the Block First year anniversary party pictures and comments are here. For me the surprise stand out act was the one act that i had never heard of and neglected to investigate prior to the show. Hearts Revolution consists of a dude named Ben mixing, on keys and doing backup vocals and a chick named Lo doing the main vocals.

Any act that takes a somewhat a pseudo live approach to a genre which predominantly features DJs mixing and not much else, is taking somewhat of a risk. – Think Chromeo – think Crystal Castles – think Pase Rock – Hearts Revolution seriously pulled it off. Unfortunately Lo’s mic was way too long to be able to hear the vocals properly. In fact, when they first started playing it wasn’t working at all and the music had to stop for about 5 mins; needles to say there were alot of confused drunk people shouting unhelpful suggestions.

Look out for these guys in the future, they show alot of potential.

Nu Ravers did their thing and delivered their consistent danceable tunes without too many surprises. Things didn’t get too crazy until after their set, when Felix Cartal from Vancouver started spinning and the Nu Ravers loosened up.

Here’s a Happy Birthday song for Nu Ravers from the Club:

Cut Copy – Lights and Music [Boys Noize Happy Birthday Remix] (mp3)

I cropped some ugly people out of this picture, i felt kind of bad while i was doing it but now i’m glad i did.
Needless to say, people were crunking.
So crunking, in fact, that shortly after as this picture was taken this dude poured vodka in a chicks eye; her response? Fall on the floor and yell “Fuck my eye!”

Many of the details surrounding this photo remain unclear.
And we’d like to keep it that way.

If anyone thinks of a snarky comment for this one then email me.
