Miguel Legault/Caroline Hayeur

Beginning on Wednesday of this week (June 2 – 6), the 2010 Mutek festival will take over seven venues in Montreal. Most of the venues are around the Saint-Laurent at Sainte-Catherine area with the addition of Jean Drapeau park. This the 11th edition of the International Festival of Digital Creativity and Electronic Music which originated in Montreal and has spread to South America, Europe and Asia. The full schedule as well as ticket information can be found here.

Our coverage of the festival will begin with San Fransisco/Baltimore based Matmos who play on Wednesday night at Monument National along with Nicolas Bernier and Martin Messier and Montreal’s [THE USER]. Bernier and Messier will be showing a performance piece titled Chambre des Machines inspired by the intonarumori a “noise-intoning analogue boxes invented nearly a century ago by Italian futurist Luigi Russolo (1885-1947)”. Matmos has been making experimental electronic music with astonishingly varied samples as far back as 1998.

The Lovely Feathers

It’s March and the last week of Concordia’s Art Matters festival which began with quite an opening party on March 5th at Plaza St Hubert. Along with the headliners The Lovely Feathers, the lineup included The Peelies and tonnstartsbandht. For five dollars (and five dollar pints) the show was a great value, The Lovely Feathers played a measured mix of older and newer songs in what felt like a longer set. Unfortunately the organizers committed the sin of mandatory coat check and then found themselves helpless unable to deal with the exodus of people trying to leave once the show ended. The crowd quickly got out of control and physical altercations with security sprang up like spring foliage. Luckily I had thrown my coat into a car instead.

Mos Def – The Ecstatic

Mos Def

Last week Mos Def released a new album called The Ecstatic which features collabs with black star alum Talib Kweli as well as Slick Rick himself. On my first few listens I was pleased to see that Mos Def is still having fun being himself. If you didn’t already know he’ll be playing Montreal for the Jazz festival on July 10th at Théâtre Maisonneuve. He`s playing with hip hop influenced jazz pianist Robert Glasper and you can get tickets here.

jay reatard

I got my first press release for a summer music festival today and the honor goes to the Suoni Per Il Popolo festival. It’s taking place for pretty much all of June (3-30) and so I thought I’d post some of the bands that I’ll be checking out. They saved some of the best for last with Jay Reatard being the last show of the festival on June 30 I believe at Sala Rossa (4848 boul. St-Laurent).

Other notable performances include T.V. on the Radio on June 3rd (metropolis) and the Lovely Feathers on the 4th. Most of the shows are taking place either at Casa del popolo or Sala Rossa. Here’s the calendar of all the shows. Not sure if you can get tickets online but you can definitely buy them at the venues.

Tomorrow night if you find yourself in Brooklyn and in the need for a party check out the Designer Drugs music video shoot for their track “zombies”. The shoot is being styled by the twentyten so stay sharp. They even specify dressing in greys or black, so leave your neon and American Apparel colours at home. If you end up going throw up a comment or email us about how it was. Here’s the event on the book and a remix of course.

Monday Re up #12: Japanese Psuedo Celebrity Edition

Hate all you want on the man, Steve Aoki knows how to throw a party. That seems to be where most people have settled over the ongoing debate over his legitimacy. Throughout ridiculous tales of stolen laptops and hotel parties, it’s pretty easy to dismiss Steve as vapid celebrity. This publication, will officially stand behind Aoki in an effort not to take ourselves too seriously. I think Steve understands that. Anyways, here’s a remix of control by Metro Station he did not too long ago. Show up. Dance. Don’t hate.
