Caribou – La Tulipe, Montreal May 5 2010

Filed under: Electronic, Photos (live), Remixes — Tags: , , — Alex @ 2:32 pm

Last Wednesday Caribou played a show to a sold out crowd at La Tulipe in Montreal. Thanks for our friends at blue skies turn black, we were able to cover the show and get some pictures. Below are some of the best ones from Caribou’s set. The set clocked in at well over an hour and included the new album Swim in it’s entirety. The band also played a few old favorites and the encore featured a few extended improvised jams. I noticed that the vocals on a number of the songs were performed not by Dan Snaith but the bassist in the band. Snaith was also being backed up by a guitarist and a drummer while he divided his duties between vocals, a second drum set and a keyboard. Caribou is a great example as the right way to translate an electronic album for a live show. Check out the Junior Boys remix of Odessa below.

Remix Roundup: The Twelves (again)

Filed under: Electronic, Remixes, mixtape — Tags: — Alex @ 3:03 pm

These two prolific Brazilians are putting out remixes faster than I can post them, so in an attempt to keep up with The Twelves, here is a roundup of some that are new to me.

The two are is a remixes of rock songs – the Radiohead song Reckoner and White Winter Hymnal by Fleet Foxes. The third is a remix of Sudden Rush by Erlend Oye. Hopefully Kings of Convenience will hear this plea and deliver us that Canadian tour we were promised a few months ago. The latest mixtape by The twelves can be downloaded from their myspace link.

Remix Roundup: The Kids Don’t Stand A Chance

vampire weekend

Vampire Weekend has been showing up a lot more often in the first few days of 2010, probably in preparation of their new album, titled Contra. The album will be officially released next week on January 12 and will include this tracklist.

1. “Horchata” 3:26
2. “White Sky” 2:58
3. “Holiday” 2:18
4. “California English” 2:30
5. “Taxi Cab” 3:55
6. “Run” 3:52
7. “Cousins” 2:25
8. “Giving Up the Gun” 4:46
9. “Diplomat’s Son” 6:01
10. “I Think Ur a Contra” 4:29

There will also be two bonus iTunes tracks called Giant and California English Pt II. Look for a post next week on this album. I’m listening to it right now and let me just say that the song California English sounds like they used some auto tune effects on the vocals. A curious choice indeed. Until then here are a few new takes on an older song, The Kids Don’t Stand a Chance, the first by Montreal’s very own Chromeo and the second by the “animals” from Miike Snow.

Holy Ghost! Remixomania

holy ghost!

These kids from Brooklyn have been remixing everything from Micheal Jackson to MGMT, with some pretty solid originals thrown in “for good measure”. You can check them out at Green Label Sound along with The Cool Kids and Matt & Kim. Here are a few of the better Holy Ghost! remixes “to keep the kids of the streets”.

The Remixes Vol 3: Jay Z vs Gonzales

Jay Z & Gonzales

Our last mashup of Nina Simone and Kanye West was very well received, climbing as high as #2 on the hypemachine. So here’s another for your consideration. It’s a mashup using the instrumental track Let’s Ride from Gonzales’ Soft Power album and the vocals from Jay Z’s allure. I think the feel of both songs go well together, let me know what y’all think (be kind).

The Twelves: Remix Roundup

Filed under: Electronic, Remixes — Tags: — Alex @ 3:44 pm

the twelves

I’ve accumulated a few more Twelves remixes that are as always, worth sharing. Classic 80’s song Take on Me by Aha and the new metric single Help I’m alive. I don’t believe the twelves have ever made an appearance in Montreal but if they do I think I’ll have no choice but to check them out. They definitely know their musical composition.

Panzah Zandahz Radiohead Remixes

Filed under: Hip Hop, Remixes, Rock — Tags: , — Alex @ 9:09 am

Panzah Zandahz

This Radiohead remix is relatively old to the internet but new to me. It’s from a entire remix album called Me and This Army: Radiohead Remix which features some hip hop mashups and electronic remixes of some classic Radiohead songs. There is also a version of creep done with a robotic voice instead of good old Thom.

The Internet and Cocaine

This ddpesh remix of a Diplo track featuring Rye Rye answers the age old question, “Do people want their songs to sound like they are sung by ghetto 13 year old girls?” The answer is a resounding yes and if you need any proof, check the song out for yourself.
As for the cocaine? The little girl sounds like she’s on it.

PS I realize rye rye isn’t actually a little girl

What Pop Rocks Sound Like

Filed under: Remixes — Tags: — Alex @ 5:35 pm

pop rocks

This song sounds like what I imagine would happen if you poured strawberry pop rocks into Radio Raheem’s ghettoblaster from the 1989 movie Do the Right Thing.
