The Black Keys: Brothers

Filed under: Rock, Soul — Tags: — Alex @ 1:20 pm

The newest blues from the The Black Keys comes from the album Brothers which was released two days ago and is chalk full of the same good stuff. The first single Tighten Up is complemented by the a video directed by Chris Piliero featuring two kids fighting over a girl in a playground. Aside from Tighten Up, the track Never Gonna Give You Up stood out as a catchy soulful ballad with some amazing horn parts (trombone i think?). The band will be playing a smattering of shows in US & Canada as well as in Europe. They will be in Montreal for the Osheaga festival in August.

M.I.A. Single – XXXO

Filed under: Electronic, Hip Hop, Soul, Video — Tags: — Alex @ 10:49 am

For anyone who heard the new M.I.A. track Born Free and saw the video (below) and thought it a harbinger for the direction her music was about to take, listen to this. Her new(er?) single XXXO could not stray any further from Born Free and I am more than pleasantly surprised. I’m certain that there is some reasoning behind Born Free being introduced before XXXO as if the order had been reversed, we would certainly be inundated with people crying foul over the new radio friendly club sounds of XXXO. This is exactly what M.I.A. does best and I couldn’t be any happier with it, so here you have it. The Born Free video and the XXXO single here in one place.

The Morning Benders At Sala Rossa, Montreal: April 15, 2010

Filed under: Photos (live), Rock, Soul — Tags: , — Alex @ 10:56 am

Yesterday night Sala Rossa hosted Berkeley’s The Morning Benders, playing the Big Echo album in it’s entirety along with some old favorites (Damnit Anna). Their soulful sound translated perfectly into the live performance and they managed to make the space feel more intimate than it really is. Check out Promises from Big Echo below (the band promises they will be back in Montreal for the Osheaga festival) as well as pictures from the show.

Junior Senior gets to know you better

Junior Senior

I heard a radio piece the other day that analyzed all the political nuances of the Eurovision song contest. Apparently who enters the contest and who wins bequeaths quite the political fallout. If you don’t know it’s a 53 year old american idol type contest in which european countries enter bands or individual artists to perform an original songs. The winning country also gets to join the EU! I remember 2006’s eurovision in particular because the ridiculous Lordi which scored a record 292 and gave Finland it’s first victory.

lordi

Gwar inspired costumes aside, Junior Senior is ridiculous in a completely different way. While the band broke up last september, Jeppe Laursen (aka senior) recently wrote Denmark’s entry into the 2009 eurovision song contest. Here are some of my favourites from Junior Senior’s second and final album Hey Hey My My Yo Yo (2007).

Can’t Hurry This Supremes Post

Filed under: Soul — Tags: — Alex @ 2:35 pm

supremes

I’ve been listening to a disproportionate amount of radio lately, and maybe this post is testament to how this little habit of mine has gone too far. I’ll try to limit myself to only when I forget to bring my iPod into the car. Anyways, its a classic song that I probably would not have thought to post if it weren’t for the radio, so it’s getting posted.

Chet Baker gets the Last Laugh

Filed under: Soul, acoustic — Tags: — Alex @ 11:20 am

Chet Baker

I don’t usually post on Saturdays, but then again I don’t usually post anything in the realm of Chet Baker. He is one of those artists that you can’t help but pay some attention no matter who you are. If you don’t like Chet Baker you basically don’t like music. Okay that’s extreme but what the hell kick my ass if you think otherwise. In the comments section of course.

A few months ago I was in a music store that was on the verge of closing its doors and becoming something more profitable – selling stereos i think. I ended up picking an amazing black and white Chet Baker poster and as a result I ventured to purchase download his entire discography. I remember the two male employees getting far more excited than was appropriate about the fact that I had picked this poster. I think they were also relieved that I hadn’t chosen a The Darkness poster. Perhaps Chet Baker is now only music for music nerds. This song is a classic – I think it was composed by George Gershwin – and I’m a bit curious to see how people like it. Maybe Chet Baker can still be relevant? Maybe not.
